Afro AIDS Info
A web-based information portal developed by the South African Medical Research Council. It provides up-to-date, scientifically accurate information on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) with a specific focus on the southern African region.

AMREF (African Medical Research foundation)
Online HIV and AIDS resource centre. It also provides specialist information on HIV treatment through the ART knowledge hub. Based in Kenya.

HEARD (The Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division)
Information on research and training on the socio-economic aspects of public health, especially the HIV/AIDS pandemic. HEARD is based in South Africa but operates internationally.

AFRIAFYA (African Network for Health Knowledge Management and Communication)
is a leading agency in the knowledge management and communication with rural and other marginalised communities. Established in Kenya in April 2000, AfriAfya was set up to explore harnessing modern information and communication technologies (ICTs) for community health and development

AIDS Alliance
A global partnership of nationally-based organisations working to support community action on AIDS in developing countries. These national partners help local community groups and other non-governmental organisations to take action on AIDS, and are supported by technical expertise, policy work and fundraising carried out across the Alliance.

CABSA (The Christian AIDS Bureau for Southern Africa)
An organisation aiming at sensitising churches, congregations and Christians about the AIDS pandemic and mobilise them to become involved and make a positive difference. (Churches include URCSA, Calvin Church, Anglican Church, Moravian Church, Dutch Reformed Church and others)

EANNASO (Eastern African Network of AIDS Service Organisations)
An umbrella network of national networks of AIDS Service Organisations that supports and strengthens networking, advocacy and coordination among the region’s civil society organisations working on HIV and AIDS.

GRI (The Global Reporting Initiative)
GRI has pioneered the development of the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework and is committed to its continuous improvement and application worldwide. This framework sets out the principles and indicators that organizations can use to measure and report their economic, environmental, and social performance.

HSRC (Human Sciences Research Council)
Information on the Human Sciences Research Council’s programmes and publications. The HSRC conducts large-scale, policy-relevant, social-scientific projects for the public-sector, NGOs and international agencies, in order to support development in the SADC region.

IAEN (The International AIDS Economic Netowork)
A website focusing on the economics of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, providing data, tools, and analysis for researchers and policymakers working to define and implement effective AIDS policy.

Red Ribbon
A portal for Southern Africa, containing information about HIV & AIDS, from how to prevent HIV to living a positive, productive life with the virus. It carries statistics, facts, figures and news for companies and organizations committed to managing HIV & AIDS in their operations.

SAT (Southern Africa AIDS Trust)
Website providing information about SAT’s programmes to support community responses to HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa through partnership development, networking, skills exchange and lesson sharing.

SARPN (Southern Africa Regional Poverty Network)
Provides information and other resources that promote knowledge sharing and debate on the political, economic and social aspects of poverty reduction processes and experiences in Southern Africa.

 

AIDS Portal
AIDSPortal is an internet platform which provides tools to support global collaboration and knowledge sharing among new and existing networks of people responding to the AIDS epidemic. It offers:

  • Focus on networking: AIDSPortal members can access a growing directory of people and organisations and quickly locate others interested in similar issues or working in a particular place. Members can start their own discussions, engaging other members in their work.
  • More open policy dialogue: AIDSPortal works internationally to ensure that the most up to date information on policy initiatives and international processes is easily accessible through AIDSPortal and that people can share information about their engagement.
  • Country-led management: AIDSPortal aims to be country-led and defined. This aims to support constructive dialogue between national responses and experiences and international processes
  • Focus on networks: AIDSPortal supports existing networks engaged in cross-cutting and national issues to share information and collaborate more effectively with relevant partners.
  • Easy and quick access to information: AIDSPortal facilitates access to information

HDN (Health and Development Network)
Health & Development Networks (HDN) is a leading facilitator of information, dialogue and advocacy approaches on HIV and TB.

SAfAIDS
A regional HIV/AIDS organisation based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Its goal is to disseminate HIV/AIDS information to promote, inform and support appropriate responses to the epidemic. SAfAIDS has proven strengths in the following areas:

  • Building capacity for other Non Governmental Organisation to enhance a multiplier effects in good practice in the southern African region
  • Information production, collection and dissemination to a wider audience
  • Building partnerships and networking with organisations working in the area of HIV and AIDS prevention and mitigation.
  • Leadership in identifying and addressing cutting edge issues

SAHARA (Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Resource Alliance)
A South Africa-based alliance of partners established to conduct, support and use social sciences research to prevent the further spread of HIV and mitigate the impact of its devastation in sub-Saharan Africa. One of SAHARA's main functions is to facilitate and conduct multi-country research in an effort to generate new social science evidence on approaches to the prevention, treatment and care of HIV/AIDS. SAHARA's main areas of work include:

  • Orphans and vulnerable children
  • Stigma reduction and behavioural risk reduction
  • Poverty and HIV/AIDS
  • National HIV prevalence and behavioural risks household surveys in four Southern African countries.
  • Gender mainstreaming
  • Capacity building of young scholars

 

AllAfrica
A multi-media content service provider, systems technology developer and the largest electronic distributor of African news and information worldwide. Registered in Mauritius, with offices in Johannesburg, Dakar, Lagos and Washington, D.C., AllAfrica is one of a family of companies that aggregate, produce and distribute news from across Africa to tens of millions of end users.

Broadcast HIV Africa
A pan-African coalition of broadcast companies for the purpose of reinvigorating and increasing the effectiveness of broadcast media’s contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS. The ABMP aims to embrace all African countries and to include both public and commercial broadcasters. Inspired by UN Secretary General’s call to action under the Global Media AIDS Initiative, the ABMP creates a structured framework for leveraging broadcast media resources with the goal of significantly expanding HIV/AIDS-related broadcast programming across Africa.

Media Resource Desk
A one-stop shop for journalists and other media practitioners to access quick, accurate and user-friendly information on HIV and AIDS prevention, care, treatment and mitigation. The desk acts as a focal point for any inquiries on HIV and AIDS information by the media, as well as a gateway for SAfAIDS to channel HIV and AIDS information to the media.

National Partnership Platform Initiative
An important part of HDN's activities are the National Partnership Platforms. The National Partnership Platforms are country-based information, dialogue and advocacy platforms, which support Civil Society partners for exchange of information and experience on AIDS, TB and related issues among all key stakeholders.
Currently partnership platforms are operating in Ireland, Thailand, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe and under development in Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Plus News
Information service for news and analysis on HIV/AIDS in Africa. The website contains news briefs and feature articles, country profiles of contact details for relevant government departments, national programmes and NGOs as well as the latest epidemiological data.

RATN (Regional AIDS Training Network)
A network of training institutions in the Eastern and Southern Africa region. It promotes training and capacity development for STIs/HIV/AIDS in the Eastern and Southern Africa region.

Soul Beat Africa
An independent organization based in South Africa that works in close partnership with Soul City and the Communication Initiative. It aims to be a space for communicators across Africa to share communication for development, knowledge, experiences materials, strategic thinking and events, and to engage in discussion and debate.

Soul City Institute
A dynamic and innovative multi-media health promotion and social change project. Through drama and entertainment Soul City reaches more than 16 million South Africans. This is done through 2 main brands, Soul City targeted at adults and Soul Buddyz targeted at 8 - 12 year olds and adults in their lives. The second big programme that Soul City Institute is involved in is the Regional Programme which is a partnership with local organisations in 8 Southern African countries. It has also been broadcast in many parts of Africa as well as Latin America, the Caribbean and South East Asia. Soul City examines many health and development issues, imparting information and impacting on social norms, attitudes and practice. Its impact is aimed at the level of the individual, the community and the socio political environment.Through its multi-media and advocacy strategies Soul City Institute aims to create an enabling environment empowering audiences to make healthy choices, both as individuals and as communities.

 

CORE Initiative Online Resources
These CORE Initiative online resources are collected from organizations working in HIV/AIDS around the world. It compiles a collection of training manuals, curricula, tool kits, guidelines, bibliographies. It also offers a link to a health communication materials database. The CORE Initiative is a USAID-funded global program to support an inspired, effective, and inclusive response to the causes and consequences of HIV/AIDS by strengthening the capacity of community and faith-based groups in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

ELDIS
Aiming to share the best in development, policy, practice and research, ELDIS currently includes descriptions and links to over 4,500 organisations and over 16,000 full-text online documents covering development and environmental issues. It can be searched or browsed free over the Internet. ELDIS is funded by DFID, Sida, SDC and NORAD, and hosted by the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, UK.

Global Curriculum for HIV/AIDS Preventive Education
This Global Curriculum Bank for HIV/AIDS Preventive Education is a bibliographic database of international curriculum materials and related documentation for HIV/AIDS education based on good practices and aimed at primary and secondary levels of schooling. Materials handled by the Global Curriculum Bank include: Curriculum documents (frameworks, plans, syllabi) for use in schools and teacher training institutes; Teaching materials and teaching aids (including a range of media formats); Studies and research related to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation; and descriptions/case studies of good practice of HIV/AIDS curriculum related material.

AMDS AIDS Medicines and Diagnostics Service
The AMDS operates a clearing house, collecting and disseminating global level information on selection and use of antiretroviral drugs and HIV diagnostics.

HIV/AIDS Policy Compendium Database
The Compendium is a database of policy statements taken from national policies and international resolutions. The statements are organized in a database that can be searched by keyword and by country. The Compendium is intended to help those involved in drafting new policies by providing examples of how other policies deal with specific issues. This database and website were developed by the USAID – funded POLICY project, as part of its HIV/AIDS policy component. The database contains over 3,400 annotated citations from policy papers from over 50 countries.

HIV/AIDS Survey Indicators Database
The database provides an easily accessible and comprehensive source of information on HIV/AIDS indicators derived from sample surveys. The database allows users to produce tables for specific countries by selecting background characteristics as well as country reports. Currently, the main sources of HIV/AIDS indicators in the database are Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), Reproductive Health Surveys (RHS), Sexual Behavior Surveys (SBS), Behavioral Surveillance Surveys (BSS.The database is designed to be global in scope, eventually covering all countries for which indicators are available. The database is overseen by a technical advisory committee that includes representatives from USAID, UNICEF, CDC, UNAIDS, WHO, US Census Bureau, Family Health International, MEASURE Evaluation, the Synergy Project, and MEASURE DHS+ (the implementing organization). There are 178 surveys available in the database.

Siyanda
Siyanda is an on-line database of gender and development materials. It is also an interactive space where gender practitioners can share ideas, experiences and resources. Siyanda is hosted by BRIDGE - the Gender and Development Information Service located at the Institute of Development Studies, United Kingdom. Many materials related to HIV/AIDS prevention are included in the database.

SMARTWork IEC/BCC Materials Database
SMARTWork has a growing collection of IEC/BCC materials (information, education, and communication, or behavior change communication that address HIV prevention, stigma and discrimination, and other workplace-related topics, available in a searchable database. The database can be searched by keywords, document type, country, language, audience.

UNAIDS/WHO Global HIV/AIDS Online Database
The UNAIDS/WHO Global HIV/AIDS Online Database collectes the most recent country-specific data on the spread and impact of the virus, together with information on risk behaviours (e.g. casual sex and condom use). Health sector response information (eg. data on people receiving treatment and coverage of hiv counselling and testing) is also an essential part of this database.

The UNESCO Bangkok HIV/AIDS Educational Materials Database
The database gives you access to educational materials on HIV/AIDS/STDs used either in the formal or non-formal sectors, mainly produced in Asia/Pacific region. Educational materials included in the database cover learning materials, resource/reading materials, training materials, and support audio-visual materials. This database can be searched either through basic search or advanced search. The advanced search will enable you to search by type of materials; target audiences; objectives; educational levels; introduction methods; and methodologies.

UNESCO: HIV/AIDS and Education Database
Information sharing site with a database of latest documents on HIV and education. Coordinated by the UNESCO office in Harare, it seeks to address informational needs of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, teachers, researchers, university students and other individuals working in the field of HIV and education.

UNESCO: HIV/AIDS Impact on Education Clearinghouse
This clearinghouse is a platform for sharing knowledge and information on the impact of HIV/AIDS on education. The site is designed as a tool to disseminate research and learn from the research of others.

 

AIDS Map
A website providing original, daily news on developments in the world. The site also includes completely searchable databases of HIV treatment and care, worldwide HIV organisation listings, and one of the most comprehensive ranges of patient information available on the web.
