HIV-related Mission
In relation to HIV, FAO identifies and promotes ways to
- Increase awareness and recognition that food and livelihood security are key elements in preventing the transmission of HIV in rural communities
- Monitor the impact of HIV on food security
- Provide member countries with policy support in their efforts to mitigate adverse effects on food security and nutrition
Activities at macro level
Mainstreaming HIV into policy
- Policy support in formulating agriculture and natural resources sector-specific strategy for HIV and AIDS

- Capacity building of institutions
- Implementation of agriculture and life skills training programmes for orphans and vulnerable children, Junior Farmer Field and Life Schools (JFFLS) in eight eastern and southern African countries

- Improving access to farm inputs
- Improving food security
- Improving nutrition and addressing the importance of micronutrients for HIV positive people
- Improving access and rights to natural resources
- Improving land and property rights for vulnerable social groups
- Improving the role of community institutions in prevention and mitigation of the impact of HIV and AIDS
- Promoting sustainable use of economic and social safety nets such as forests, woodlands and fishery resources
- Strengthening resilience through labour and time saving practices, recording and sharing local knowledge, and livelihood diversification
- Preventing further transmission through information, education and communication strategies
Key Roles of the Regional Offices
- The overall identification, planning and implementation of FAO’s priority activities in the region. The subregional offices work closely with the respective regional office and are primarily responsible for the overall planning of FAO activities in the sub-region
- The Office of the Emergency Coordinator for Africa in Nairobi supports FAO’s emergency operations in the field and ensures strategic coordination and project development as well as promoting consistent programming, planning and fundraising
- Coordination and operational activities relating to emergencies and rehabilitation for eight southern African countries are handled by the FAO Regional Inter-Agency Coordination Support Office (RIACSO) office in Johannesburg, in close collaboration with other UN institutions
- Support and technical advice for all offices is provided by FAO Headquarters and technical divisions
Key Roles of FAO within the Regional HIV and AIDS Team – RHAT
- FAO is responsible for the area of food security in the Impact mitigation, orphans and vulnerable children working group
- Agriculture and life skills training programme for orphans and vulnerable children such as the Junior Farmer Field and Life Schools (JFFLS) in eight countries
- HIV and women’s land and property rights and livelihoods
