International Fund for Agricultural Development – IFAD

IFAD's mission is to enable the rural poor to overcome poverty

HIV-related Mission

IFAD focuses on the economic empowerment and development of the rural poor through organisational and institutional development and through the facilitation of access to resources and their efficient use. Given the strong links between rural poverty and HIV, IFAD’s poverty alleviation strategy and rural and agricultural investment projects and programmes aim to address the developmental impacts of the epidemic, with a view to reducing the incidence of HIV in rural communities and to mitigate the impact of the epidemic on poor rural households and communities.

Key areas of IFAD’s response to the HIV epidemic

Poverty alleviation and livelihood security programmes adapted to the conditions created by HIV/AIDS, such as income generating programmes, microfinance projects and functional adult literacy programmes

• Food security and nutrition related innovations or adaptations of existing practices
• Incorporation of risk reduction strategies into IFAD projects and programmes. This includes HIV/AIDS information, education and communication programmes for HIV prevention and AIDS mitigation
• Support for those at special risk, such as widows and other caregivers looking after orphans and vulnerable children
• Building partnerships with organisations that can support HIV/AIDS risk reduction, livelihood support, and AIDS impact mitigation among IFAD’s target group

IFAD has developed a Strategy Paper on HIV/AIDS for Eastern and Southern Africa aimed at strengthening its operations in the region as they relate to HIV/AIDS
