Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS – UNAIDS RST-ESA

UNAIDS brings together the efforts of ten United Nations agencies or cosponsors for a coordinated and expanded response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic that engages the efforts of many sectors and partners from government to civil society. The ten cosponsors of UNAIDS are UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank

HIV-related Mission

As the global advocate on AIDS, UNAIDS leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response. It is dedicated to preventing the transmission of HIV, reducing the suffering caused by HIV and AIDS and countering the impact of the pandemic on individuals, communities and societies.

To improve coordination and harmonisation of national responses, UNAIDS advocates for the ‘Three Ones’ principle, i.e. one agreed framework of action, one national AIDS coordinating authority with a broad-based multisectoral mandate and one agreed country level monitoring and evaluation system.

Strategic Objectives

  • Empower national leadership for an effective response at country level
  • Mobilise and empower country-level public, private and civil society partnerships
  • Promote and strengthen country management of strategic information
  • Build capacities to track, monitor and evaluate country responses
  • Facilitate access to technical and financial resources at country level

Key Roles of the Regional Office
