HIV-related Mission
It is UNICEF’s aim to support and strengthen the capacities of individuals, families, communities and nations to prevent HIV infection and to ensure protection and care for children and young people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. UNICEF will support actions to
- Prevent new infections among adolescents
- Prevent Parent-to-Child Transmission of HIV
- Expand access to care and support for children and their families living with HIV and AIDS
- Ensure care, protection and support for children orphaned or made vulnerable by AIDS
Key Roles of Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office, ESARO
UNICEF ESARO advocates for expanded action and collaboration among regional institutions and networks. The regional team also
- Monitors trends in the epidemic, its impact and country responses
- Coordinates and facilitates multi-country initiatives
- Provides technical advisory services and programming support for country programmes
- Promotes networking and the exchange of information about experiences and research findings
- Mobilizes resources for country programmes and multi-country initiatives
- Coordinates with key regional partners
- Support cosponsors’ interagency responses
Key Roles of UNICEF within the Regional HIV and AIDS Team (RHAT)
- Lead agency of the impact mitigation and orphans and vulnerable children working group
- As member of the prevention working group, UNICEF is responsible for PMTCT and supports HIV prevention with most-at risk adolescents and young people
- As member of the strategic planning, mainstreaming and capacity development working group it is responsible for procurement, supplies planning and management
- As member of the AIDS treatment and care working group it is responsible for the work around paediatric AIDS and supports work on adolescents living with HIV
